In creating this series of mixed media works on steel sheets, I was driven by a deep desire to connect with my roots and explore the ancient art forms that have shaped my cultural identity. Drawing inspiration from the rock art that can be found in South African landmarks, I sought to create pieces that were not only visually striking but also deeply meaningful.
One of the pieces that I created for the "Resistance is Us" exhibition held at the ABSA North Tower Gallery was a rusted plate on metal with an environmental message to return back to your roots. It was both a representation of my personal journey and a call to action for all who view it to reconnect with the earth and the vibrational beings around us.
As a self-portrait, this work is a reflection of my own emotional journey and a testament to the power of self-discovery through art. I was inspired by the beauty and simplicity of rock art, and I sought to incorporate these elements into my own work, infusing each piece with a sense of the ancient and the timeless.
My central message in this piece was to encourage others to educate themselves on emotional intelligence and to see beyond the surface level judgments we often make about one another. By looking inward and reconnecting with our own roots, we can begin to see the beauty and vibrancy of all those around us, regardless of skin color or cultural background.
I believe that art has the power to connect us with our deepest selves and with one another, and I am honored to have had the opportunity to create this piece as a testament to that truth.
